How do the org chart and HR access work?

Who reports to whom, drawn for your whole staff — and the few people who may open your HR paperwork.

The org chart, under People & crew, shows everyone working for your firm and who they report to, indented by level. Anyone on your staff can see it. It shows names, job titles, disciplines and trades — never employee numbers, start dates or pay. A person whose manager has left the firm, or who has no manager set, is flagged so you can fix it.

Your admin sets each person's line manager, from the org chart or the person's page. A line manager must be one of your own employees who still works for you. Nobody can be their own manager, a manager can't sit below their own report, and an AI assistant is never anyone's manager — Veristep refuses each of these, whichever screen the change comes from. A person's line manager decides their time off and holds their check-ins, so this is worth keeping right.

HR access, under Settings → Policies, is for the people who handle your HR paperwork. Your admin always has it and can give it to others. Someone with HR access opens new-hire packets — including W-4, direct-deposit and I-9 files — and every check-in. Removing it takes a short reason; it stops at once, and it stops on its own if that person leaves the firm. Supervisors and managers don't get it by their role, and Veristep's own staff never do.

The chart says manager has left
That person's line manager no longer works for you. Pick a new one with Change manager.
A line manager change was refused
The person you picked reports up to them already, has left, or works for another firm. Pick someone above them.
Someone can't see a packet
They need HR access. Your admin gives it under Settings → Policies → HR access.
